Sharing Medicine, Saving Lives
We all feel pain for those who are in trouble. Our collective evolution has made it so, that for the survival of the group we sympathize with people in pain and feel what they feel, if only in our minds, and are motivated to provide help. nepal2 Companies are commonly scolded for being unfeeling towards others, with unyielding corporate interests that care for little else than profit. What people often forget is that companies are also made up of people, human beings that feel the same emotions that everyone else does. It was on April 25th, 2015 that our hearts were broken by the devastation in Nepal caused by a 7.8 magnitude earthquake. Instead of bureaucracy and public statements, we at Novo Surgical decided to take action. Through MedAssets, one of our group purchasing partners, we were introduced to MedShare, a nonprofit organization that takes surplus medical supplies and ships them to the places that need them most. With their logistical resources and our donations of needle holders, forceps, and scissors, they were able to supply surgical equipment to the hardest hit, often rural areas of Nepal. nepal3The volunteers’ stories are incredible. Nepal is a landlocked, mountainous country with little infrastructure to transport supplies. The earthquake only exacerbated these existing problems. Yet, that did not stop MedShare from sending shipments by land and sea to hospitals and surgical centers in desperate need of instruments. In one case, a 40-foot long sea container full of surgical equipment traveled across the ocean from Georgia to India, then was brought by tractor trailer on a 20-hour journey along the Nepal border. When the roads got too rough, the volunteers got on foot and hiked over 1,000 boxes of equipment to the project site. This story highlights the incredible determination of these volunteers. We are proud to be partnered with the volunteers of MedShare as they continue their aid missions across the globe.
