About-us-square-image-one-3-541x350

The instrument supply chain is complex: you have steel producers, forging mills, finishers, wholesalers, private labelers, retailers and at the tall-end distributors, all getting a piece of the pie even before the instrument lands in a surgeon's hands. This leads to cost escalation that has nothing to do with quality. Instruments that cost a few hundred dollars to manufacture (material plus labor) often retail for more than a thousand. Healthcare providers bear the cost, at a time when financial pressures are the greatest they've ever been. That doesn't really seem fair.

It's not. But it doesn't have to be this way. At Novo Surgical, we're experts in streamlining the supply chain. We cut out the middlemen to ensure our instruments are brought to market at the best possible price without compromising quality. We source our own steel forgings, avoiding the markups charged by finishers, contract directly with craftsman to manufacture our products and then retail them to end users. We've traveled to Tuttlingen (the small town in southwest Germany where most of our instruments are made) and built close relationships over decades with dozens of family run craftsman shops that produce our instruments. We're proud to support such entrepreneurs, allowing them to make a better margin for their craft and not be beholden to an inefficient supply network to commercialize their products.

The rendering to the right, taken from Ambroise Paré's anthology Dix Livres De La Chirurgie (Ten Books on Surgery), shows a selection 16th century surgical instruments. Paré was the official surgeon of several French monarchs and a pioneer in the fields of surgery and pathology. While it's clear how much innovation has taken place with regard to the devices themselves since his time, the model for getting them to market has remained antiquated. That's ultimately what we're trying to fix. The result? You get the same quality instrumentation you expect, at prices you don't. The direct sourcing movement has long taken hold in industries ranging from bespoke suits to coffee beans, so why not medical devices? There's still a lot to be done to address ballooning healthcare costs, but we believe that our model is a step in the right direction.

product quality

our model

Our products conform to the highest standards in operating room grade, reusable instrumentation. Novo Surgical instruments are made from the same 300 and 400 series martensitic steel – tested to meet ASTM standards in composition, corrosion and hardness – forged at the same mills and even crafted by the same hands as many instruments from our higher-priced competitors. There’s a reason why many of our products look familiar, down to the feel and finishing work, when they arrive in surgeons’ hands. To back it up, all of our instruments come with a lifetime guarantee. That means if something’s wrong, like an instrument breaks or corrodes, we’ll repair or replace it free of charge.

our model

Mergers and acquisitions in healthcare have resulted in large, unwieldy device companies offering a dizzying array of product lines under one roof. The result is a loss of focus amongst the billion-dollar conglomerates that are trying to juggle many competing interests. Some have even decided that they no longer want to be in the instrument business and have put those divisions on the market. At Novo Surgical, instrumentation is all that we do. It’s our entire focus and expertise. If your surgeons need a custom instrument, we’ll manufacture it. If you need our field representatives on site to help sort through sets or assemble trays, we’ll be there. Our customer service team can cross reference against more than 50 different brands – and if an item you need is not in our line, we’ll add it so you don’t have to continue shopping around. As an independent brand with a laser focus on instruments, we pride ourselves on that white glove service. At a time when representatives from our competitors are stretched, we’re doubling down on our core competency: instrumentation.
